If you’re a new plant mom or dad wanting to add beautiful green foliage to your space but also desire the easiest plant possible to care for, I will always recommend the snake plant.
I will even go as far as to say that snake plants are the number one must have for new plant owners and/or anyone who feels doomed to kill anything green they touch.
What Makes Snake Plants the Number One Must Have Plant for Newbies?
Snake plants or Sansevierias, are eye catching with their long sword shaped leaves, coming in a variety of sizes, tones of green and shapes.
So, atheistically they are very pleasing to any space.
When browsing the aisles of your local nursery or plant shop, or if you live in a small town like me, your local hardware store, there are some variables you want to consider before making your purchase.
As a plant owner adjusting to the needs of your new family addition can be very challenging. Each will have their own preferences for water and light consumption. These are two critical components to their health and longevity.
Sansevierias (snakes) are the reigning champs for being the easiest plants to own because they require very little work and water. That is something to get very excited about.
The great thing about sansevierias is that they do very well in low to medium light and they beg you not to water them often. I like to say, snake plants thrive on neglect.
Tip: Allow the soil to dry all the way out between waterings.
An added benefit to the Sansevieria being less demanding; it is also a plant known for its ability to help purify the air.
Snake plants absorb toxins from the air, lessening air allergens.
Converting CO2 (carbon dioxide) to O2 (oxygen) at night, makes it ideal to house several of these plants in your bedroom.
Three can be found in our bedroom, two large sitting next to our beds and a small one sits on the dresser.
Personally, I can not recommend the snake plant enough for anyone itching to bring a green baby home but also looking for low maintenance and hard to kill.
The benefits of this plant are amazing and undeniable.
Do you now understand why I love snake plants so much and they’re my go-to recommendation?
If you don’t have a snake plant already I hope this inspires you to get yourself one. Thank me later.
