I affectionally call the Fiddle Leaf Fig the diva plant and if you read my post Lesson on Letting Go from the Fiddle Fig Plant then you already have an idea why. You also know that I am equipped to share key tips on caring for this green diva. If you haven’t read the post, then you’ll want to go check that out.
As I’m determined to have “Victory” and master the Fiddle Leaf Fig lets go over the main five keys to keep in mind when caring for this beauty.
One of many mistakes I made with my very first Fiddle, Maya was definitely overwater but the absolute first mistake was following what’s trending and not doing any research of my own before bringing her home.
1. Never follow what’s trending without doing your own research.
Researching the plant of interest allows you to gather detailed information before making the purchase. You may want to make sure that particular plant actually fits with what you’re able and willing to provide. The tag attached to the plants at many local hardware stores does not tell the full story. Also, when purchasing from a nursery or plant shop, ask questions.
2. Disregard the watering schedule with this one.
It is very easy to overwater this plant if you try to follow a watering schedule, perhaps that you have set for your other plant babies. It’s not going to work for these. The rule of thumb here is to finger test the soil. At least two inches into the soil should be dry before watering again. After while you may have a good estimate of when your fiddle needs a drink but never skip checking the soil first. Speaking of soil here’s a bonus tip: pot in good soil in the proper size pot that has drainage holes.
Here is the golden tip. Imagine gold confetti falling from the ceiling like when contestants get the golden buzzer/ticket on AGT.
3. FIDDLE LEAF FIG PLANTS DO NOT LIKE TO BE MOVED!
Again for the people in the back, fiddles don’t like to be moved. I learned with Maya (my first fiddle fig) that they will have a major temper tantrum almost instantly. This is why I often call them diva plants.
While I thought I was fixing her browning and dropping leaves, I ultimately made it worse and she stood before me nearly naked. For this reason finding the right spot from the beginning is major key.
4. Three Keys to An Ideal Environment for Fiddles:
- Warm and Humid (humidifier or mist from a spray bottle can help with that)
- Avoid direct sun, aim for medium light
- Keep away from vents
5. A Fiddle Needs Love and Affection
Do Not, I repeat DO NOT, deprive your fiddle leaf fig of love and affection. This is not a snake plant, fiddles do no thrive off neglect and they need to be checked often. Wiping the leaves free of dust, examining for insect infestation, and checking the soil frequently promotes healthy and continuous growth.
I personally enjoy talking to my plants, playing music and creating a whole vibe. Call me crazy but I think they enjoy it too.
